How to make an easy fun fold birthday card

Hello

Today, I want to show you an easy fun fold card called a Diamond Z fold pop up. (Rolls off the tongue doesn’t it!) Both of the cards in this post were made for my nieces, who recently turned 20. (I added a few extra details to personalise them before posting them.) This fun fold has been around for a while, but I had never made one until my lovely friend and team leader, Emma aka Coastal Crafter, created one during her Friday morning (in the uk) Card & Cuppa sessions a month or so ago.

I’m making a concerted effort to use up designer paper from my stash, so the paper I used was from a paper pack called Delightfully Eclectic from the last annual catalogue (sadly retired). Really you can use anything from your stash. We made this card at my May card classes and it went down really well.

What is a fun fold?

There are lots of ways to jazz up your card design by including some fun folds. You can definitely WOW friends and family with these simple card making ideas. This card might look complicated but really isn’t. You can see how to make them by clicking the photo below or the YouTube video later in this post. One extra score line to the card base makes the z fold and a small column added to the inside creates the pop up.

Adding embellishments

There are so many ways to decorate the diamonds and panels in this style of fun fold card. For both of mine, I used Paper Butterfly Accents (#162612) in the Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalogue as embellishments. You get 40 beautiful laser-cut Paper Butterfly Accents in a pack, 8 sheets of 5 different butterflies! They come in a base colour of white, so you can easily customise them using your favourite Stampin’ Up! colouring technique. I used sponge daubers to add colour to the wings and a Stampin’ Blend for the body and antenna.

Instructions for this fun fold

To make this fun fold card I started with a piece of Thick Basic White card measuring 21 x 14.8cm scored at 5.25 x 10.5cm. To decorate the front and inside panels I trimmed a sheet of the gorgeous Perennial Lavender designer series paper to 14.5 x 5cm and 14.5 x 10.2cm. Then I cut two pieces of Highland Heather measuring 5 x 5cm and one at 5.5 x 5.5cm. Next as I like a very thin border, I cut two pieces of Basic White measuring 4.7 x 4.7cm and one at 5.2 x 5.2cm. You can easily make it easier on yourself if you have a slightly larger border.

Now it was time to do create a background for my butterflies, so using Lost Lagoon ink I stamped foliage from the Painted Lavender stamp set onto the white panels. After that, I added colour to the butterfly wings with sponge daubers and used a Stampin’ Blend on the body and antenna. Click below to see me make this version.
