How to use partial die-cutting in your cardmaking

Hello

Today I’m sharing some examples of how you can easily use partial die-cutting in your card making. Firstly, have you tried this technique? It is certainly easier that you think.

As an illustration, this first card was one of the projects from my August classes, and my ladies were convinced they would be unable to do partial die-cutting it, but they all did an amazing job. Did you spot that all of the cards today feature cute critters? Indeed they are all from the Hearts & Hugs bundle by Stampin’ Up!

What is partial die-cutting

Partial die cutting technique basically involves cutting a design to create a shaped edge or remove parts of a design. At any rate here are some tips:

  • Firstly, you can draw a line with a pencil to show you where to cut and/or use a ruler to make sure it’s a right angle.
  • Then you can use a craft knife or scissors to cut along the pencil line.
  • To cut part of an image, you create an embossing sandwich by placing the card stock with the image on the first cutting plate, then the die-cut over the image, and finally the second cutting plate on top up to the pencil line.
  • You can also use a trimmer to cut a little bit at a time.
  • Finally, if you have rough edges, you can use a bone folder to smooth them out.

Partial die-cutting twice

The first partial die-cutting are the critters and then the apertures are created with dies from Stylish Shapes as this helps to highlight the partial die-cutting. Indeed in two of the cards I created the apertures with the circles die and in the simple easel card, because you know how much I love a fun fold, I used the largest square die from the Stylish Shapes die. I’m not sure if you can see but I embossed the green card behind the badgers and on the basewith the Fern 3D embossing folder.

Also to add something extra to the next card, I used the Textured Paint 3D embossing folder to make it look like the pair of critters were sitting on an iceberg (or that’s what it looked like in my head!) You can watch me make the Walrus card later in this post or you can click here.
